KBFPC BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Maura Brenin, President:  Maura is the owner of Maura's Cafe in Old Town Homer.  She has enjoyed utilizing her culinary gifts to give back to local nonprofits for the past sever years.  Her son Asa is a constant course of light and love and inspiration in her life!

Jeff Szarzi, Vice President:   As an educator and Homer citizen for the past 12 years, I have witnessed the great work that KBFPC has done, and I am proud to be on KBFPC's board.  When I am not on the board, I am teaching at Homer Flex High School, gardening in the summer, running my dog team in the winter, or playing music with close friends.  As an educator, I bring to the board my understanding of the needs of Homer's young people.  I have been honored to be on the KBFPC board for the past three years.  The staff and board are vibrant, enthusiastic, and professional in their pursuit of KBFPC's vision.  During my tenure, the Board has accomplished many goals in fundraising and organizational operation.  I am honored to work with so many dedicated people and look forward to the work and goals we have before us.

Melon Purcell, Secretary:  I got interested in family planning right out of college.  As a volunteer with Planned Parenthood in a small rural New York college town, I finally got to ask, and later answer for others, all the questions that I could not ask at home.  It was so good to finally understand my body.  Many years later when I moved to Homer, I was introduced to KBFPC by my good friend.  I started on the Board back in 1987 and have served ever since because I believe in the mission of KBFPC.  It has been very rewarding to be a part of the evolution of the Clinic.  When otherwise engaged, I teach first grade at McNeil and encourage my airplane-building husband.  For fun, I ride my horse, garden and walk the dogs.

Miranda Weiss, Treasurer:  Miranda received a BA in biology from Brown University and an MFA in creative writing from Columbia University.  She is on staff of the Pratt Museum and she teaches creative writing at University of Alaska Anchorage — Kenai Peninsula College.  Miranda is also author of Tide, Feather, Snow, a memoir of a life in Alaska.

Kathleen Gustafson:  I’ve been on the board since 2003.  I feel like volunteering with KBFPC is the natural compliment to my work in Youth Theater and public radio.  When I worked at Smoky Bay Learning Center, I witnessed directly the good work that Family Planning does in health education programs and I want to do what I can to be a part of it.

Tarri Thurman:  I have been a board member since 1995.  Teen outreach and providing health care for those without insurance are my key points of concern for the clinic.  I am a mother and a grandmother, a metal artist, and a hard core gardener.

Carlynn "George" Barrientos:  I have been living in Homer with my dog Cartman for three years and work for Food Services of America as the local sales representative.  I was immediately drawn to the clinic not only for the work they do but the people that run it.  It has been my calling from early on (high school prophecy) to be part of such an organization though it took me until now to find my way.  I am motivated by the energy and mission that this clinic services.  I appreciate the commitment of the staff as well as my fellow board members and feel honored to serve on the board.

Katie Koester:  I had the good fortune of being raised in Homer, Alaska.  Kachemak Bay Family Planning’s commitment to the health and education of individuals in a friendly and professional manner drew me to KBFPC initially, and as a woman in her late twenties, I share the organization’s interest in connecting with young people.  After graduating from Homer High School, I left Alaska to attend college in Massachusetts, which led to subsequent opportunities to study and work in Venezuela, Cuba, Mexico and Chile.  My degrees in Politics landed me a job with Representative Paul Seaton, whom I work for now as a Legislative Assistant.  My interests continue to center on Latin American studies, as well as gender and power relations, nutrition, and fitness.  When I am not at work I enjoy traveling, running, cycling, kayaking and hiking.

Morgan Sicilia:  I came to Homer 4 years ago with a background in Multicultural Studies, Social Psychology and Education.  I am currently employed at The Center where I have been working with local youth and families to promote healthy social and behavioral development.  My deep interest in education, youth outreach, and community involvement drew me towards KBFPC where I was proudly elected as a board member in June or 2009.
